Many drums came from the napoleonic wars and their owners brought with them a solid playing technique, tried and tested on the european battlefields. Most of them became village policemen, a profession created in 1791 in France. Talking about breton music, the drummer appears during the nineteenth century with the binioù-bombard duet, giving the rythm to the dancers. The binioù- bombard-drum band disappeared in the early twentieth century. Later, the drummers joigned the brass-bands, which will move towards the breton bagadoù. Since then, a few musicians have worked to the rebirth of that trio : Roland Becker with his National Breton Orchestra and more recently the plein Ouest trio. Last but not least, The Napoleonic Drum and the Great Highland Bagpipe play together within the McLewis’ Duo.
